ALL ABOUT WRINKLE RELAXERS
(Neuromodulators such as Botox, Nuceiva & Dysport)
-
Wrinkle relaxers are neuromodulators: substances that inhibit the transmission of a nerve impulse. Botox is the most well-known neuromodulator brand, so “Botox” has become an umbrella term used by the general public to describe every type of wrinkle relaxing substance. There are actually many types of neuromodulators, all used for different purposes, and this is why cosmetic injectors carry a range of brands.
When a neuromodulator (ie. Botox) is injected into an area, it blocks the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract, or wrinkle. When this signal is blocked, the muscles relax, causing the overlying skin to become smooth resulting in a more youthful appearance!
Neuromodulators are beneficial for TWO reasons:
1. They effectively treat existing signs of aging such as frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead and smile lines.
2. They prevent future signs of aging by limiting those facial movements which cause new lines to appear and deeper wrinkles to form. -
No, while they are most often used to smooth lines, they can also correct asymmetry of the face; uneven eyes, cupids bows, and eyebrows.
Botox is also the only neuromodulator brand approved by Health Canada to also treat chronic migraines, eye muscle disorders, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and TMJ disorder (muscle stiffness in the jaw). -
Every appointment includes a consultation as part of the service. Before each treatment we will discuss your areas of concern and I can address any questions you may have.

Not really. Most people experience only mild pain during a session. The sensation is often described as a small pin prick, lasting for an only a few seconds in each treatment area.
I often hear “Oh, that’s it? That’s what I’ve been afraid of? It didn't hurt!” after a client’s first treatment. It really is not as scary as one may think.

Yes. Botox has been approved for use in Canada since 2001, it is also the most well known anti-wrinkle brand. Botox is the most popular non-surgical treatment in North America, so you likely already know someone who has had Botox, they may just not tell you…

The effects of Botox varies by individual and depends on the area being treated, the strength of the muscle, and the length of time someone’s been using the product. Generally results last 3-5 months.
There are cases where it lasts longer (~6 months) or shorter (~2 months). Results tend to last longer after your second session.
-
The amount of product you need depends on the strength of the muscle and the area being treated.
Below are the most common treatment areas and the number of units often required:

Frown Lines: 10-25

Wrinkle relaxers are $8-$10 per unit. The number of units required will vary based on your desired results, we discuss this in more detail during your consultation. -
Yes, you will be able to move your face immediately after treatment, but the goal of Botox is to prevent the facial movements that cause wrinkles. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for Botox to take effect, so you should notice less mobility in the treatment areas at that time.
If you have a special event to attend, or a vacation, make sure to book your Botox appointment 2-3 weeks before for best results. -
A lip-flip is a Botox injection that rolls the upper lip up and out just enough for the mucosal tissue (pink lining) to be visible. This quick in-and-out procedure creates the illusion of fuller lips and usually lasts 4-6 months.
-
Botox is a muscle relaxer and is injected superficially over the upper lip muscle which relaxes the downward tension in that area. Relaxation of this muscle causes the lip to flip up and curve back making more of the lip visible.
Lip fillers are lip augmentations, meaning they add volume. This is done with hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers (KISS), which increase lip volume for approximately 4 to 6 months.Filler and Botox are different but are often used in combination to improve lip contours and increase lip volume.

You may experience some bleeding at the injection site as well as some tenderness and/or minor bruising. Any discomfort can be treated with Tylenol but please avoid taking Ibuprofen or other blood thinners as it will prolong bruising.
*Also avoid taking any blood thinners at least 24 hours before your appointment. -
Yes, you can have Botox immediately before and after flying. Just avoid putting pressure on the treated area with your hands and/or other facial tools.
-
No, you are never too old to get Botox because it is a highly effective preventative and restorative treatment. People 65 years and over may experience a bit more discomfort during the injection and a slightly longer healing time. This may be due to having thinner skin or more sensitivity prescription or over the counter medications
